You many have heard Disney's slogan "The Most Magical Place On Earth" but I am here to tell you the truth. Disney is the most expensive place on earth. Disney has come up with more schemes to separate you from your wallet contents than a pick pocket in Times Square on New Year's eve. Disney dining is not any different, you will spend money , alot of money. The sooner you get used to that fact the better off you'll be. Ok you can get a hotel room with a kitchen and make your own snacks, eat breakfast in your room. There are ways to save money but let's save that for another time shall we. I am going to tell you where to eat the best that Disney has to offer on your tour of "The World". Here is a list of must dine at restaurants within the Disney Resort area. Click on the restaurant name for a link to the menu. 1. 'Ohana at the Polynesian resort. To get here by the Disney transportation system take the monorail from Magic Kingdom . It is your third stop. You will likely need a reservation because this place fills up fast. They offer a character breakfast with Lilo and Stich or family style dinner. For Disney family style means a ton of food that they bring to your table. There is no need to order. One price covers you whole dinner including appetizer, entree and dessert. It is an awesome place for kids as they have coconut races and limbo dancing for the kids to try during dinner. The palate is supposed to be Polynesian but don't count on that. Since when are scalloped potatoes part of polynesian cuisine. Don't be put off by that, the food is tasty and I know food! Your server will bring you meat skewers with steak, turkey, pork and sausage. There will be a salad to start and wonton type chips with dip to your hearts content. Chicken wings and shrimp are next up.Stir fried veggies and the afore mentioned scalloped potatoes will make your mouth water. Dessert is bread pudding with bananas foster sauce. All of this costs $26 for adults and $12 for children under 10. If you make reservations for 7:30 you will finish eating in time to sit on the Polynesian beach and watch Wishes the fireworks show.
2. Le Cellier at the Canada pavilion inside EPCOT. This is a steakhouse and yes Le Cellier means cellar in French so obviously the place is decked out like a cellar so there are no windows. That is the idea. I have often heard people complain about this restaurant having no windows. So let that be known up front. It is small and dark and quiet-no worries this is Disney they are used to kids. This place serves up the most cheddary cheddar soup you'll ever have. I have also heard complaints that the soup is too cheesy. Once again-that is the idea. Know what you are getting into before you show up here. The steak here is second to none . Everything you find at a steakhouse you'll find here. They also have a delicious vegetarian option of roast peppers stuffed with a bean mixture. I have tasted this myself and can vouch both for its non Canadian origins and its scrumptious nature. 3. The Crystal palace is a buffet style restaurant inside the Magic Kingdom. Beware this is a character meal. Winnie the Pooh and friends come around to tall the tables for pictures and general affection from patrons. It is a great place to meet the characters without having to line up in another queue. This restaurant is always very cool so it is a great escape from the broiling Florida sun. The buffet here has no steam tables which may mean nothing to you but for a foodie like myself it matters. The dishes sit upon heated counters which keeps them much hotter than steam. The food doesn't dry out because it is taken away by hungry diners so rapidly. They serve kid food (chicken nuggets, pizza etc) and adult food (hopefully you know what that is.) alike. 4. San Angel Inn restaurant serves authentic Mexican food. Not authentic like those "authentic" restaurants serve in the downtown areas of most major cities. This IS authentic. That means don't order the nachos and expect a pile of cheese and sour cream on top of chips. This is not Chi Chi's my friend, this is Mexico. You will see mariachi bands and dine under the stars even at noon. The restaurant looks like a courtyard in the evening-very romantic. You may be aware that the Mexicans invented chocolate and no dish showcases this better than chicken mole (molay is the correct pronunciation). It is a complicated recipe to make and the chocolate is unsweetened and married with about 29 other flavors so your chicken doesn't taste like a hershey bar. 5. The Whispering Canyon cafe will entertain as well as feed the whole family. Often when a child asked for ketchup they end up with 40 bottles on their table, or upon request for a straws you may find yourself with a whole box in your lap. These things amuse the kids in attendance to no end. Psst...get one of the men dining with you to ask where the washrooms are. hehe
The restaurant is located at the Disney Wilderness Lodge hotel. Another family style eatery you will be served a skillet filled to the brim with roast chicken, corn on the cob corn bread and other camping favorites. The pulled pork could tempt a lifelong vegetarian such as myself.
6. Sci-fi Dine -In Theater Restaurant has you dining inside of booths designed to look like cars. The waiter will take your order form the drivers side just like at an old fashioned drive-in while short clips of vintage movies are played on a big screen. The menu here is burgers and fries for lunch and steak and pasta for dinner. The food here is so so but the atmosphere makes up for it. One caveat here-don't dine here if you are very big-these cars are pint sized. 7. The California Grill located atop the Disney Contemporary resort has award winning food and prices to match. You can't even get into the elevator here unless you already have a reservation. From steak to sushi this sophisticated dining room is worth the mortgage you'll have to take out to eat here. Go for a special occasion. 8. Cinderella's Royal Table is the rip off of the century. I waited my whole life to find out just what is inside the castle at Magic Kingdom only to find out it is just a big round room. The food is mediocre and the atmosphere is lame. Unless you are traveling with an 8 year old girl skip this money pit. If however you are eating with a little princess in tow the castle is heaven. Several princesses make the rounds as well as the fairy godmother. My son was suitably unimpressed with the characters as I was with the cuisine. 9. Boma a The Animal Kingdom lodge will treat you to watermelon rind salad and a killer Moroccan seafood salad. This is a buffet but set up with individual stations instead of one long trough. It does make dining more pleasant. At $26 for adults Boma is a bargain. Kids like the set up and there is little waiting to fill your plate. 10. The Boulangerie Patisserie is not just any bakery. This is France after all complete with rude service people . Never have I tasted such a buttery croissant. Located inside of EPCOT at the France pavilion you will feel you are really in France.
